In November 2011, Ichor were appointed to deliver the full refurbishment and building extension of Western Sydney University’s Building EE which accommodates the University’s main graduation auditorium. Due to extensive carbon damage following a fire in the building, WSU required Ichor to undertake immediate and expeditious fire recovery works in time for the mid-semester graduations scheduled in the next 8 weeks.
Ichor worked to a challenging 24 hour, 7-day rotation programme to prevent undue risk and injury to contractors and personnel and to meet the University’s deadline. Daily meetings were held with insurance assessors, the client and end user groups to assess damage, develop scope of services for rectification works, detailed costings and programing to facilitate the fire recovery works. So successful was this approach, all graduations were held as scheduled.
The works involved extending the front entry by building a new structural steel awning, including a feature glass roof and new automated doors. The lobby was also upgraded and included new mechanical plant room and equipment, new lights, ceilings and flooring. Teaching rooms included new furniture, audio visual and lighting controls. The auditorium was completely refurbished and included new feature timber cladding, new audio visual, lighting, glass balustrades, new seating, carpet and mechanical services throughout.
